More than one out of every four cars purchased in Spain is, or seems, an off-roader. The figures are overwhelming, and the reality of the SUV for something more than a passing fad. So much so that the fact that a brand such as SEAT present its first SUV itself is quite an event, and we’ve even come to blot that from Martorell to join so late to a party that could have provided good returns for this brand. It is not by chance that we started talking of the SEAT, and that we will make repeatedly in this article, by the weight that the brand has historically had in the Spanish market. And it is precisely that we wanted to talk about that, those wonderful years in which a car did not have to look like a off-road, but to be, really.


In the olden days, every car had to fulfill a few skills range minimum. Today you only need to seem like an off-roader.

Today we are surprised even a SUV, or a crossover, and with advertisements in which the vehicle appears, on a forest trail. The skills range are no longer of interest, or of interest to a minimal percentage of customers opting for a car of these features. Sells a lot more showing happy families on vacation (see announcement of Mitsubishi Outlander), browsers, and entertainment equipment (see announcement Kuga), technology in general (see ad of Nissan), or style (see ad SsangYong Tivoli), although there is still some irreverent (see announcement of the Range Rover Evoque).

We have to assume that the vast majority of customers who opt for a todocamino ever step on a forest track, ever need to avoid the obstacles out of the asphalt and the biggest challenge that you face the free height of your body, and the clearance of suspensions, will be to overcome the bumps in the steps of zebra and some other curb.

At other times, defined as the road to many pathways was less an excess of optimism.

But there was a time when any trip was an adventure for a car, and its occupants. A time in which journeys by road is not passed by pristine coastal highways, marked with a line drawing. These reminiscences are still present in any car that has been designed and developed with the focus on what many referred to as emerging markets, or markets such as South america, where the driver still has to cope with many roads poorly paved or even unpaved. Why, if it was to be a suspensions as high, and with so much slack, a Citroën C-Elysée?

For our part, we have already ceased striving against the reality of the market. It is difficult to ask the one who is deciding the purchase of a car that is guided by aspects rational.
