SEAT Ateca is the first SUV of the brand and has caused quite a stir since its launch. As we do not have any predecessor, SEAT has had to make your design from scratch. The process is long and complex, and may take up to four years from the beginning until the vehicle reaches the assembly line. The brand makes us a summary of the steps taken at the time of creating the SUV.
To make us to the idea of the complexity of the process leave us with a few figures: 1,400 days it has taken more than 1,000 sketches to define their lines, 5,000 kilos of clay to play it at actual size, and a 1,000 litres of paint to design your color palette. As you can see, you are not going to skimp on resources, something normal if you’re looking for is to create a model of success. But, what are the eight steps you must follow to get to Ateca?
first of all is to have things clear and define the DNA of the vehicle. Take into account a multitude of important factors, such as its potential market or the profile of your consumer. It will be the basis for the in the process, because from here on, we will consider the briefing on the initial all successive steps.
Begins the field work and the first thing is to take the pen and paper. Designers begin by small and simple sketches of “what I would like to do” and end up making reproductions so faithful like a picture. As we said, over 1,000 sketches in the four years that lasts the process.
Generation of CAD
The next step is to recreate the sketches made by hand virtual. With this is done to give volume to the future model and thus verify, as it would be. Not only worth it for that, but it is also used to make a technical follow-up.
Model of clay
Tap get hands to the work with the clay. It will make a life-size model that weighs four tons (double that of the conventional car). Recreate physically the exterior design and we are introducing some changes. The whole process is artisanal and hand-made by shapers.
Although it is in English, which means this step is reached final design. The clay model is approved by the company, and it looks a real look, equal to that which will hit the market months later. As we said at the beginning be used up to five tonnes of clay in total.
To create the palette of colors there will be a specific department that is called Color&Trim. Is responsible for creating colors inside and external to the model and are taking ideas from worlds such as fashion or architecture. You can carry out 100 formulations and invest 1000 litres of paint to get to the 12 tones of the palette exterior of the car.
This same department of which we spoke above, will also have part of the responsibility in seats. To create them you have to keep in mind criteria of aesthetics and comfort. Will be handy with a sewing machine to combine “the colors and materials that can best fit”.
The interior has to be – oriented driver and therefore focuses the screen and the rest of the elements to him. Another of the key factors is the functionality, so that you take into account things like where to keep the mobile phone or a bottle of water. Everything must be useful and effective in the passenger compartment of the vehicle.
