According to Mercedes-Benz, the car of the future will grow (up) 39 cm to improve its aerodynamics


Undoubtedly, one of the prototypes that caught our attention in the Frankfurt Motor Show was the Mercedes Concept IAA . Mercedes-Benz’s passion for engineering, technology and if we observe its history, a visionary brand as far as aerodynamics are concerned. Think of the silver arrows in their creations streamlined to break records, or the saga of Mercedes C111 . The Concept IAA is the prototype that will look in years , perhaps decades, taking stock of solutions, some of which reach the street, which were applied in its design . But the most surprised us by far has been to extend his body to improve aerodynamically .

Why this idea? Lengthen the body of a huge sedan like this, and make the roof fall soften and gradually approaches the ground, leads to improved aerodynamics. But you will be with me that a sedan have to stick to certain limits in its dimensions. The improvement of aerodynamics is holding the hand of dynamic elements , the more popular the ailerons. Ailerons rise and fall (almost must-have any modern sports), but also wheelarches that open and close (to the new generation of the Renault Megane included), or even that rise and suspensions cutting down the wind more effectively, among other utilities.

The Impossible Concept design IAA makes from 80 km / h aerodynamic mode of operation is activated . Mode in which eight segments extending in the rear that make your body grow 39 centimeters. In the front bumper, a few centimeters are extended wheelarches and close your tires to avoid aerodynamic turbulence.

The Concept IAA is, as mentioned, an impossible design . The technical challenges involved in such an advanced solution like this are too great to justify the benefit. It is very difficult to see in the market in many years, cars to extend their body in this way. And yet, active aerodynamics play an increasingly important role in the automotive industry, not only in sports and supercars, but also in passenger role.
