Believe it or not, this prototype is key to the future of Renault sporting

Some statements of Patrice Ratti, CEO Renault Sport Technologies, the British magazine Autocar made us think that the future of Renault Sport may be hybrid. Although Ratti not assure that this is the way forward for Renault RS it acknowledges that the brand has not closed that door and even be working on this possibility. Whereupon I could not help remembering that less than a year ago we put them behind the wheel of a prototype, a priori or sporty looks, nor is it a pure strain RS (see test Renault Eolab). And against all odds and gave us the keys to how it could be that hybrid RS future of Renault .

Test Renault Eolab: I traveled to the future, I liked it and came back to tell what the Renault of the next decade

The Renault Eolab was presented with a clear pledge. Inside hid 100 innovations , some of which have not yet been explained in much detail – as its innovative transmission three relationships – and Renault keep them in a safe place, perhaps aware that the Day tomorrow they can play a key role in its product range. And that promise was none other than the fact that 30 of those 100 are in final product innovations in 2016, a total of 50 in 2018 and a total of 90 in 2022 .

This means that, in short, almost all the innovations of Renault Eolab end up in one form or another in Renault products in the next seven years.

The best kept secret Renault was an efficient change three gears and we already have tested

The Renault Eolab surprised us and enjoy a sporty feel , in his address, to his energetic thrust, or even in the driving seat. And we tell you that we would not dare to say that this prototype RS deserved the appellation, but it seemed like a peculiar GTI come from the future to anticipate what will drive most likely within five years.

Surprising that feels the future of Renault Sport could settle for less power than current models . Something that basically we welcomes sanity arrives at a time in which a small-GTI or a sports compact seem to have no future with less than 200 and 300 hp, respectively. The Eolab content with TBI 90 hp engine assisted by an electric motor of 54 hp and 50 kW peak point (68 hp). The key to its performance not only be in hybridization, which would take place with batteries (or energy storage systems) very lightweight, and virtually ruling out the possibility of plug-in hybrid, but with the mysterious transmission three relations Renault will provide more details in the coming years.

renault-eolab-mdm-04 And the reason why Renault Sport futures settle for hybrid engines and will not need more power than today is none other than weight. Renault expected in the coming years is feasible to produce models with a more or less widespread use materials such as aluminum, magnesium (in certain panels and structures) and the carbon fiber (eg your tires). A roof magnesium only weighs 4 kilograms.

And if we say that the prototype we tested last year weighed only 955 kilograms and a Renault Clio TCe 90 CV – without batteries used by the Eolab – weigh only 805 kilograms if we apply the solutions used in this prototype, you will understand that the margin for fun, agile and fast sports, without additional power is really high.

renault-eolab-mdm-02 I still have my doubts about that Renault can apply all these innovations in its range, so in a relatively short time, just seven years, the life cycle of a product. Still, we will continue to rely on the promise of the French …
