BMW has unveiled its new range of vehicles plug-in hybrids, which is encompassed in the denomination BMW iPerformance. All of them turn to the technology BMW eDrive that bet for electrification to decrease the use and emissions of pollutants. BMW iPerformance represents the intermediate step between the models of BMW i and the cars with traditional combustion engine of the German mark.
there are Four models that will carry the flag iPerformance belonging to the Series 2, 3 and 7 in addition to the range X, pointing to different segments of the market. The first to arrive was the BMW X5 xDrive40e that was introduced in the market in November of 2015. To this has been added in march, the BMW 225xe Active Tourer and the BMW 330e. In August we will complete the offer with the brand new BMW 740e xDrive and its variant long battle 740Le xDrive.
The range BMW iPerformance is especially interesting for those who have to move in the usual way by large urban centres. In this area not only enjoy the movement with zero emissions, but also obtained additional advantages as the fact of being able to circle the lane BUS-HOV, the free parking in areas with regulated parking and the possibility to move through areas of restricted access.
Three modes eDrive
on A visual level there are not many differences between the models with technology eDrive and their equivalents with a combustion engine. Only the side cover to the outlet, the look of the exhaust, details of blue color in the front grille, anagrams and wheels optional design specific reveal the models electrified.
In the cabin, something similar occurs and the distinctions are patent in the estribera aluminum, features and additional information box of tools and the multifunction display and the [19459002button]eDrive. Less obvious is the new engine cover or the 2-Series Active Tourer and the 3 Series have fuel tanks smaller than that of variants with a combustion engine: of 51 litres passes to 36 in the 225xe and 60 litre goes to 41 at the 330e.
The hybrid system is inspired by the concept of electric mobility with the BMW i3 and BMW i8 and adds around 150 kg to the weight of the vehicle. Employ an electric motor synchronous associated to a engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology and a battery lithium-ion high-voltage. The system of intelligent energy management controls the use of the electric motor and the combustion to achieve the best performance and the highest efficiency of the set.
The eDrive system has in three operation modes: AUTO eDrive, MAX eDrive and SAVE Battery. The three can be combined with the usual modes of the function Driving Experience Control (Sport, Comfort and Eco Pro) that modify the behavior of the car to affect the parameters of the steering, the transmission, the air conditioning and throttle response.
AUTO mode eDrive optimizes the performance of the combustion engine and the electric, allowing to reach a maximum speed of 80 km/h and driving 100% electric. The mode MAX eDrive allows the vehicle to drive only with the electric motor at speeds up to 125 km/h. The combustion motor only enters in operation by stepping on the accelerator to get the maximum acceleration possible. The mode SAVE Battery keeping the battery above the 50% load to take advantage of your energy later.
BMW 225xe Active Tourer
BMW 225xe Active Tourer uses a battery of lithium-ion high-voltage 7,7 kWh which is located under the rear seats, which is why the rear bench is 30 millimeters higher than the rest of versions of the mpv German. The trunk reduces its capacity to 400 litres, 68 less than the variants that employ only the combustion engine.
The hybrid system uses a turbocharged 1.5-liter three-cylinder that delivers 136 HP and an electric motor of 65 kW (88 HP). In total, there are 224 CV that allow this minivan go from 0 to 100 km/h in just 6.5 seconds. The gasoline engine sends its power to the front axle and the electric motor at the rear, which provides a set which in certain circumstances functions as a all-wheel drive system xDrive electrified.
The combined fuel approved is 2.1 l/100 km and the autonomy mode 100% electric is 41 miles (NEDC). The complete filling of the BMW 2-Series Active Tourer plug-in hybrid is made in three hours and fifteen minutes connected to a domestic power socket. Using a BMW i Wallbox (charging capacity of 3.7 kW) the load operation takes two hours and fifteen minutes.
We went to the saloon BMW 330e, which employs a gasoline engine four-cylinder with 184 HP and an electric motor of 65 kW (88 HP) to achieve a global power of 252 HP. Despite its power, the consumption approved is of only 2.1 l/100 km with a range of up to 40 miles driving with the electric motor. The storage capacity of the lithium ion battery is 7.6 kWh.
Both the electric motor as the propellant gas acting only on the rear axle so that the Series 3 power is propulsion rear in all circumstances. To maintain the characteristic sporty feel of BMW the weight distribution is 50:50 and for the transmission relies on the sensational gearbox Steptronic 8-speed for the clock in 6.1 seconds to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h.
The hybrid system removes 110 litres of cargo space so the trunk of the 330e has a capacity of 370 liters. As was the case with the 225xe Active Tourer, the full recharge on a standard household outlet conventional is done in three hours and fifteen minutes or in just two hours and fifteen minutes using a Wallbox.
BMW X5 xDrive40e
BMW X5 xDrive40e was the first hybrid car electric plug-in series from BMW. The hybrid system delivery 313 CV on the whole, the result of its gasoline engine four-cylinder 2.0-liter with 245 HP and the electric motor integrated in the gearbox Steptronic eight marches, 83 kW (113 HP).
The lithium ion battery of the X5 has a storage capacity of 9,2 kWh. The system is located at the base of the trunk, which loses 150 liters of volume to provide 500 litres. The German model offers all-wheel drive permanent, whether it is driven with the electric motor, heat engine, or both, and the control system dynamic damping (DDC) is standard.
The benefits of this SUV are beyond doubt being able to go from 0 to 100 km/h in 6,8 seconds. The magic of the electrification allowed to boast of low fuel consumption 3,3 l/100 km despite his great performance. The autonomy mode 100% electric reach 31 km (in cycle NDEC), a value that is not very high compared with other models of plug-in hybrid.
The BMW X5 of iPerformance completely recharges its battery in 3 hours and 50 minutes using a power outlet conventional. In the case of using the BMW i Wallbox, which can be installed in the home by the program BMW i 360° Electric, the time is reduced to 2 hours and 45 minutes.
Price of the range BMW iPerformance
The bet of the German manufacturer, for their models of alternative mobility is stronger than ever and is felt in a few prices similar to those of their equivalents with a combustion engine. So, the BMW 225xe Active Tourer is worth 39.500 euros (the 225i Active Tourer is on sale from 39.350€), the BMW 330e is worth 45.300 € (a 330i has a price of 42.400 euros) and the BMW X5 xDrive40e worth 73.500 euros (the X5 xDrive 40d costs the same).
As help to buy, for to know if it is more convenient to a plug-in hybrid or a model with a combustion motor BMW offers a useful tool that calculates the costs of one or another type of motorization according to your usual trips. Now it’s just a matter of math.
