PSA has announced the manufacture of a a new SUV in the French factory in Rennes. The new model will be an SUV, C-segment, which would replace the Citroën C4 Aircross, 2012, and that would be based in design on the prototype that was presented in the Hall of Shanghai in 2015, the Citroën Aircross concept.
With the arrival of this new Citroën C4 Aircross (name unconfirmed) to Rennes, this French region may to recover part of the lost jobs previously (to 1,400 from 2012) for restructuring of PSA. The Rennes is a plant under-utilised, which currently produces 60,000 units a year and expected in the future, with new models like the SUV, Citroën, Peugeot 5008 and Citroën E-Mehari, can reach 100,000 units.
The new SUV Citroën is already in development under the internal code C84. Will be based on the modular platform EMP2 and unlike the current Citroën C4 Aircross, and will have nothing to do with Mitsubishi. It will be a model full PSA, with elements in common with the new Peugeot 3008, which is manufactured in Sochaux.
start of production is planned for 2018, after investments for over 100 million euros to adapt the plant in Rennes to the arrival of this new SUV. The model will also be manufactured in Chengdu, China, for the local market, although we do not know the exact dates.
With the arrival of this new Citroën C4 Aircross, it is expected that the sales of Citroën in the segment to grow substantially. In the first five months of the year have been sold ,832 units of the C4 Aircross derived from the Mitsuibishi ASX, much less sold, for example, a Nissan Qashqai, which only in Spain sells more than half each month.
