Dakar 2017, stage 5: Plateau of Bolivia for free souls

the entrance of The Dakar 2017 in Bolivia has left a good number of surprises, not only on the course designed by Marc Coma, but among the favorites to victory. The abandonment of Carlos Sainz, Yazeed Al-Rajhi or Toby Price draw a new Dakar that kicks off with the fifth special stage of the test between Tupiza and Oruro, or what is the same, in full altiplano of Bolivia. With a special 447 kilometers for bikes, quads, cars and UTV’s, and 438 kilometres for trucks, the race continues its course in a variety of terrain that will make it very difficult to keep a steady pace.

in fact, in relation to the fourth special between San Salvador de Jujuy and Tupiza, the changes are minimal, the margin of the own change schedule by competing in Bolivia. This means that pilots will have to land very different with areas of pistes at high altitude, small, mountain passes, areas of ‘fesh-fesh’ and two sections of dunes, every time the tour goes back to explore the region of Potosí. An authentic macedonia of surfaces that will be put to the test the strength, consistency, and the skill of navigation of the pilots. All of this again to more than 3,500 meters altitude and with a small neutralized zone in the middle of the special.

The first bikes and quads started the special at 11:00 hours (hours peninsular Spanish), while the cars will start the competition at 13:58 hours. For its part, the trucks will start the competition two hours later, although it is worth noting that the special will not be equal to the ‘elephants in the desert’ in relation to the rest of the categories, all time that the heavyweights of the Dakar will take an alternate route in the last section of the special, although the mileage will be very similar for all participants.
