it Is often said that the cars that start the test don’t look anything like those who compete in the first Grand Prix of the season. If well is a phrase a bit exaggerated, as the concept and philosophy of the car is defined clearly from the beginning, it is true that several areas are undergoing modifications in a progressive manner.
Is the case of the Mercedes W08, that on the opening day of this week’s final pre-season test saw how he introduced numerous changes. Starting with the front wing, we can observe a subtle change in the deflector, vertical (1), which is now open and is divided into two parts in your area more wide. This type of modifications are made following a more in-depth study of the aerodynamic flow with look to redirect the same in a more efficient way around the tire, cooling ducts for the brakes (also modified) and the suspension arms.
the most striking modification was the introduction of a new version of the whole shark fin/T-Wing (2), which dispenses with the opening of cooling and adapts to the needs of the T-Wing for greater efficiency in the rear spoiler and, of step, to generate some load aerodinámica.
Already in the area of the pontoons, Mercedes has made several changes in this complex network of aletines and baffles that surround the air intake. The base of the deflector front side (3) change completely to stay ahead of a few centimeters, while the most advanced of the soil (4) also varies its shape, passing from one appendix to four individual.
Además the pontoon itself modifies its shape in the vicinity of the cockpit (6) to gain volume and take a slight inner curvature. What does not change despite of this change is the baffle horizontally located above the same. It is also noted that the diffuser of the car -that does not appear in the images – has evolved, something that has happened in several cars of the grill, between which is located the McLaren.
The Toro Rosso STR12 has introduced a small change in the morro, as it has added a small slit on each side, thus losing their shape uniform with the intent of improving the aerodynamic flow resulting at the moment of impact with the mismo.
Sauber has not been back, and also to evolve the diffuser, has introduced a few new bargeboards (2) in combination with the removal of one of the tabs (1) located in front of the deflector lateral.
Finishing off with Ferrari, it is worth noting, on the one hand the new Monkey Seat (1) of the three planes instead of two and, on the other, the complex work performed on the union of the diffuser with the rear spoiler (2-blue arrow) and the ends of the own diffuser worked until exhaustion (2-red arrows). Without a doubt this is a crucial zone to generate downforce, and Ferrari has spent many hours in it to try to take a step forward this temporada.
