In the 1983 season, Ferrari had a new driver lineup, coming in the wake of the death of Gilles Villeneuve and Didier Pironi’s accident at the German Grand Prix.
E n 1983, after a black year for the team, Ferrari again the protagonist of Formula One World Championship with his new driver lineup, coming in the wake of the death of the great Gilles Villeneuve in Zolder (Belgium) and the crash of Didier Pironi on the occasion of the Grand Prix of Germany.
This new lineup consisted of two pilots frontline. One of them, René Arnoux , the same as Gilles participated with that unforgettable duel in ’79 and Dijon Patrick Tambay , who had already tasted success with the “Scuderia” in 1982 Grand Prix of Germany as it was called as a replacement for Villeneuve.
The 126 C3 designed by Mauro Forghieri and Harvey Postlethwaite Ferrari was the weapon for that season and allowed both drivers to get 4 wins, 3 to Arnoux and for Tambay , this being the last in the circuit Imola vs. Ferrarista public. Whereas his partner, 3rd in the final standings of the tournament were given in Canada, Germany and the Netherlands and allowed him to fight for the championship until the last race in a championship won by “The Professor” Alain Prost , followed by “The Viper” Nelson Piquet .
The first GP of the year was held at Interlagos (Brazil) and was won by Piquet, followed by Keke Rosberg who eventually was disqualified and curiously corresponding points were reassigned to their position. The podium was completed Nikki Lauda, placing the first Ferrari recently on 5th place with Tambay.
Then, teams and drivers moved to United States to dispute the date on the historic circuit of Long Beach (now used by the IndyCar among other important categories) Ferrari achieved a podium unnoticed Arnoux because the focus was on a winner John Watson with the McLaren-Ford who rallied from 22 ° starting place completing his English team 1-2 Austrian teammate Lauda.
Things did not seem to improve Renault’s house where the Gauls were victorious hand Prost at Le Castellet. However, concerns were transformed into joy and took place the next race in Imola where Tambay won the aforementioned victory Arnoux and third place for Cavallino unleashing the joy and enthusiasm of the fans Ferrari team.
In the succession of races in Monaco and Belgium Ferrari could only get fourth and second , failing GGPP points in the US (then 2 races were run by season the country of Uncle Sam). Getting rematch with another victory this time in Canada doing it again with Arnoux 1-3 winner.
Just having achieved a third and fifth place in England and in the middle stretch of the season, Ferrari won again on August 7 in Germany Arnoux hand. Repeating the victory in the Dutch GP after an impressive 1-2 a GGPP of Austria won by Prost in the old Zeltweg (now refurbished and known as Red Bull Ring).
Locally again, during the GGPP From Italy team could only achieve the second and fourth places in the race, behind Nelson Piquet unstoppable recovery that started well in the tournament. Repeating the victory at Brands Hatch and leaving for the last race of the season a definition of myocardial between Prost, Arnoux and Rio de Janeiro.
Unfortunately in the definition Arnoux had to abandon a career Piquet drove at will until victory gave him unparalleled Riccardo Patrese, achieving Ferrari the constructors’ championship .
No one could predict at that time that 126 C3 would like “the ultimate champion” in memory of “tifosi” and would start a long title drought that lasted until 1999 when again and hand of Eddie Irvine, Ferrari returned to win a constructors’ championship .
