Fiat Talent, the new van medium

Fiat Talent

In the summer of 2014 we learned that the successor to the Fiat Scudo would have a lot to do with Renault. This is the result, the Fiat Talent, cousin natural of Renault Trafic and Opel Vivaro. It will occur in the plant French Sandouville and orders will begin to be addressed in brief. The name Talent is not new, already existed in the 80’s a variant of short battle of the Fiat Ducato, which is called as well.

In 2011, we learned that the agreement of the manufacture of light vans between Fiat and PSA Peugeot Citroën played to its end, with an effective date in 2016. remains in force the agreement of manufacture of vans size top: Ducato, Master, and Boxer.

like Trafic and Vivaro, Fiat Talent will be available with two ceiling heights, two lengths of battle-and two-body (cargo van or floor cab). The load capacity will range between 5.2 and 8.6 m3, and up to 1,200 kg. The engines are all 1.6 diesel, between 90 and 140 HP of power.

Citroën Jumpy first-generation

The alliance PSA/Fiat

Fiat and PSA Peugeot Citroën had a collaboration in the area of commercial vehicles from the 70’s, in a larger format: Fiat 242 & Citroen C35. In 1978, he founded the joint venture Sevel Sud for the manufacturing of their successors: Citroën Jumper, Peugeot Boxer and Fiat Ducato. Those names remain today, as well as the manufacturing of their respective replacements generational.

Sevel means Società Europea Veicoli Leggeri S. p. A.

Ten years later he signed another agreement for production of minivans and large commercial, in the format immediately below to the models of Sevel Sud. Thus was born the society Sevel Nord, it begins to work in 1993. Made appearance the triad formed by Fiat Ulysse, Citroen Evasion, Peugeot 806 and Lancia Zeta.

Two years later, Sevel Nord starts to build vans medium, Fiat Scudo, Peugeot Expert and Citroën Jumpy. The first generation of these vehicles was replaced in 2006 by the second, keeping the same trade name in the three cases. For its part, station wagons evolved in 2002, changing the names: Citroën C8, Peugeot 807 and Lancia Phedra. Fiat kept the name Ulysse.

Fiat Scudo second generation

Sevel Nord is located in the French town of Valenciennes. It has a staff of 2,400 employees and is capable of producing 200,000 units a year. In 2002, they had produced a million units. In 2009 we reached the milestone of two million units, achieved in 16 years of activity. In may 2015 it reached two and a half million units.

In 2010, Fiat abandoned production of its minivans Ulysse and Phedra. The economic crisis has impacted negatively on the sales of this type of tourism as at the level of commercial vehicles. The italians decided to lighten up more ballast, and in 2012 they announced the end of their participation in Sevel Nord, sold their part to the French. The latest minivan, the Peugeot 807 and Citroën C8, they stopped manufacturing in 2014.

Almost at the same time it was announced the agreement between PSA Peugeot Citroën and Toyota, for which the French built a commercial for the japanese. Later introduced the Toyota ProAce, which, like the Fiat Scudo, it shares virtually everything with its relatives French. The agreement between PSA and Toyota will last beyond 2020. Recently we met the new generation of vans, will be called Citroën Spacetourer, Peugeot Traveller and Toyota Proace, ready to comply with the standards Euro 6.

Renault Trafic

¿And, what about Renault and Opel?

on the other hand, Renault and Opel were working in the same segment, Renault Trafic and Opel Vivaro. Previously there was also a variant Nissan, Primastar, which now no longer manufactured. In turn, Renault collaborates with Daimler with the Mercedes-Benz Citan (based on Renault Kangoo), Opel collaborates with Fiat with the Combo (based on a Fiat Doblò) and Mitsubishi will manufacture the Fiat Bull (based on Mitsubishi L200).

As you can see, in this manufacturing of commercial vehicles, there are many friendships crossed. These joints allow the manufacturers involved to save money in the development, manufacture and marketing of commercial vehicles. Given that they are to work, the differentiation between them is not so important.

These vehicles, on the other hand, also have a high margin business, so all savings are welcome. Depending on the commercial policy of each brand you can find small differences between one and the other, since everything that is platform, mechanical elements and interior parts -logos aside – they are exactly the same.
