GP Abu Dhabi: Wehrlein and Manor want to regain the smile on Yas Marina

Pascal Wehrlein will start in eighth row of the starting grid for the Grand Prix of Abu Dhabi after being cast in Q2 for the fifth time so far this season. The German, in his first appearance at the Yas Marina circuit, is pulled out of the sleeve a perfect lap with the one that made it through the cut in the first round with a margin of one-tenth on the Toro Rosso of Daniil Kvyat.

In the second phase, with a single set of ultrablandos at your disposal, Wehrlein -who could be playing his last Grand Prix with Manor, it sounds like the main candidate for the second seat at Sauber – he was unable to improve and finished recording the sixteenth fastest time, less than two tenths from the Renault of Jolyon Palmer. All in all, the German believes that it is possible to think about regaining the all-important tenth place, which now occupies Sauber.

We have done a great job so far and we have to be happy with my position. We are ahead of Sauber and our pace seems strong; who knows what might be possible and what might happen ahead. I think that we should dream of and fight for the points. Brazil was a hard day for us and I would love to bring a smile to everyone in the team.

For his part, Esteban Ocon had to be satisfied with twentieth position. The frenchman suffered problems with the pneumatic ultrablandos “for reasons that we discuss, that compound will not work”, said Dave Ryan, race director of Manor– and he called “disastrous” their classification.

In the free all looks fine, but as soon as I mounted the ultrablando I saw that I was improving as my companion and the others did. For me, there was nothing more in terms of speed in this tyre and we will have to examine what the problem was, since it is clear that something had. But if I can make a good start, and I’m sure I can do it, I hope to recover some positions and make a good career.
