GP Hungary: the grill of The chaos, what could be and was not

Nico Rosberg got the fastest time of the Q1, which was played on wet asphalt and had to be interrupted on four occasions as a result of the rain and the red flags. That led to many drivers could not mark your records for reference until the end of the session, while others were not able to improve the initial, achieved under worst-case conditions.

All this made possible that the differences between the times were very large, something that would affect especially Daniel Ricciardo, Max Verstappen, Sergio Perez, Nico Hulkenberg and Valtteri Bottas, that they would lose their positions of departure for the Hungarian Grand Prix despite having reached until Q3.

The regulation specifies that, “during the Q1, the best time of a pilot may not exceed 107% of the fastest time of that session, or you will lose your registration and will not be able to compete in the race. Under exceptional circumstances, however, may take into account the times of the free practice sessions, and the commissioners may allow to start the race”.

This exception has been applied systematically in the past, being very few cases in which it has denied the participation of the pilots who, for exceptional cause, have not been able to get a time fast enough in Q1. The problem is that, these pilots, who have obtained a position out among the first ten, are forced to fall to the last positions. “Any pilot accepted by that exception will be taken to the back of the grill and will go after other pilots who have received another type of penalty. If there is more than one driver accepted in this manner will be placed on the grill in the order they achieved in the third free practice”.

After several deliberations, the stewards have decided under article 35.2 of the sporting regulations, that specifies that the first ten positions must be filled by the drivers who participated in Q3, so that all drivers retained their original positions in the absence of if there is any kind of protest on the part of the teams that could stand to benefit.
