Haas has been the next to unveil its all-new design, this is the second car of the americans, the Haas VF17 (remember that the initials VF belong to the Very First). The team played with great debut last year, since the car was practically a Ferrari from 2015 who had changed the paint and little more. The NASCAR had come to F1 with a very different model to how they arrived at HRT, Caterham and Manor. Although apparently seen what has happened with these three, perhaps the best model to enter in F1 is that they have chosen the americans, buying everything possible to other teams, in this case Ferrari (steering, gearbox, transmission, power unit, etc).

In this second season no major changes have been made beyond to tailor the car a bit to the new rules, as did the three small teams disappeared we talked about before. While the large, or nearly all of the large, performed major upgrades each year, the further back in the grill seemed to simply adapt the previous design to the new season. It is logical taking into account your budget for the development and the resources they have available, but if you want to compete with the old teams, this is not enough. Hope I’m wrong for the sake of the fans of the pilots of Haas and the team, but not croe that this year you have a start of the season as mind-blowing as the last, where they took advantage of the initial chaos to get a good handful of points and then fade away completely. This year I don’t think they have that opportunity, and I personally think that they will fight with Sauber to not be last…

Starting at the front of the vehicle, the nose has been changed. The past year mimicked Ferrari in 2015, but in this season they have implemented the typical nose to let in more air for the lower area of the nose towards the rear. In terms of the front wing, it is quite simple, similar to last year, just in the shape of a delta, and adapted to the new regulations in terms of width. The truth that the front part seems very simple and does not leave the feeling that hide too many details or surprises aerodynamic. If you compare it with the Sauber, which I think will be its most immediate competitor, you must remember that they have the same power unit Ferrari, but seeing the level of aerodynamic of the two cars, the Sauber seems to be more careful, so that still strengthens my theory that you fight not to be last with the swiss…

There are some fins and profiles in the most delayed of the nose to channel the air, as we have seen in many other cars. Are some profiles small and simple, and seem to be designed to redirect the air towards the lower area of the pontoons to reconducirla back. In that same order to work the bargeboards of the sides, which also does not seem to be too devious. You can also see some turning vanes under the nose angular and without too much complexity. This is not a criticism, it is simply logical that with the budget you have and after major changes in the regulations, have not done a job as large.

In terms of pontoons, have been remodeled to make them something more stylized and try to crop area occupied by the air intakes in the lower area. That is to say, as the rest of the teams have preferred to lift the jacks to leave more air for the area of the bottom of the pontoon to be funnelled towards the rear area above the flat bottom. The openings of the air have gone from being triangular as in the past year, to be more oval, but the top and side are almost the same (they have only changed the lower area of the latter). In addition they are accompanied by an air-conditioner different from the one seen in the last season, this year embraces the pontoon for the area above to bring also the air that slips by the area above it towards the rear and is curved to the middle pontoon by the side to anchor to it, instead of getting more down to the flat bottom in a straight way as last year.

In regards to the suspensions, the arms and the geometry seems quite similar to last year, so nothing to highlight. Another detail that I don’t want to miss is taking cooling to the brakes, which I have shown in the image that we have left to the fans, but you can see in the circuit during these tests and is similar in form to that of 2016, only that something bigger as it is trend. If we continue with the analysis area to the rear, we see that the pontoons remain a silhouette similar, but altered in certain details. Have adjusted as they have been able to the fairing or the engine cover, which included a great shark fin to improve the air flow that goes toward the fore of the rear spoiler, avoiding certain turbulence and helping especially in twisty circuit. The rear wing has been adapted to the new rules, being lower, wider, and with the endpleates curved as we have seen in other designs submitted until now. These endplates are also very clean and with little detail, with the typical grids to improve the efficiency of the rear wing and the slots that we saw in other years and other cars in the lower area of these, just behind where it is anchored to the chassis.

I’m missing another detail that you analyze the area in front, is the airbox. It is very simple, in triangular shape, as we have seen others (like the Ferrari on which it’s based…), so that little bit of note in this regard, so that we continue with the analysis… of Haas have shown the rear area of the car, unlike other teams, but, obviously, have saved some detail of the diffuser, since they are not stupid. What is shown in the image is the greater angle of rake and the increased height of the diffuser. On the sides of the flat bottom, the fiber is worked with some bends and canaladuras just frenet the rear tire in the form of eses is to improve the efficiency or the sealing of the air that leads to the diffuser, and surely as you progress through the season we see more complexity in this sense. Need to know also how it will work the engine that saved under the carbon fiber, we don’t know how it has worked for Ferrari on his new power unit, but it sure performs well with the changes you made.

Haas decided to invest a large part of the budget that they had for the development of the previous car to attached to be ready for the new changes of the season comes in. That’s a great idea, but I honestly don’t see what’s new and spectacular details that make think that the car can get up. Grosjean and Magnussen will have to fight with what they have, and we must not judge too Haas. It is a young team and this year there has been an enormous change in the regulation, that does not help to a computer novice… In my opinion, if next year there is stability in the regulations, and having invested more resources in this car that will serve as the basis for the 2018 season, the luck will be a bit more favorable for the american team.

Conclusion, well, have already had a filming day and have now begun the test in Barcelona some problems. We’ll see how they progress, especially in the last test where they all show their best potential, but, above all, when you play Australia for the first race. I repeat, I have nothing against the team Haas, but I think that will be last in the constructors ‘ world of 2017, unless a major surprise that one of the other 9 teams have gotten the leg with your design to the bottom. And I conclude with something very striking which I have not spoken before, the new color. The Haas have changed the pitura, although you still see the black, red and gray, the gray of 2017 is a darker graphite type, which has given the car a design much more beautiful. I quite like the aesthetic change.
