Lewis Hamilton added his fifth victory at the circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal, in a race where his strategy came out perfect and resisted to achieve a new first. The current champion, who dedicated the race to his idol Muhammad Ali in boxes, beat Sebastian Vettel and Valtteri Bottas, who achieved his first podium of the year.
Carlos Sainz completed a spectacular comeback from the 20th to the 9th thanks to a perfect strategy, while Fernando Alonso stood at the gates of the items, with an 11th place that knows little.
New touch Hamilton-Rosberg
The brilliant departure of Sebastian Vettel came as a surprise to the Mercedes. The German pilot took off before the first turn Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg, who lived the other rubbing at the first bend: the british made very wide track to play and pulled out of the track to his companion, who fell to the area where I was Fernando Alonso.
The Spanish, who had come out reasonably well, just could not resist to Rosberg a few metres away. After passing Jenson Button like a prayer, did the same with the Spanish to fight for the comeback. The british McLaren lasted a little more: on lap 11 his engine said enough and, among flames, he was forced to leave.
Vettel and Räikkönen surprised everyone by stopping in the pit lane, the first. The idea was to go to two stops and be faster on the track always, compared to the rest, who bet on soft and a single stop as an initial approach. The ultrablandos began to suffer serious problems of ‘graining’, which took this idea very soon. The strategy they came out reasonably well, especially the German, that with superblandos took little more than three laps in the aup back to the second position, while Hamilton was trying to delay his pit-stop. The ultrablandos the champion and Mercedes lasted 29 laps, until I rode a few soft tyres with which he finished the race.
The ‘estratego’ Ferrari
The strategy Ferrari had a handicap of course: mid-career, with more than 25 laps on his tyres, Sebastian Vettel started to roll something more than a second per lap slower than Lewis Hamilton. The resulting second pit stop allowed him to maintain second place behind Mercedes, but with Max Verstappen third, and more close to what you would have wished. The mantra of Vettel from that moment on was clear: I had to fly out on track to try that Hamilton is not escaped with a few tires in the worst conditions… but it was not enough. Hamilton, with a stint of 46 laps and a single stop
The fight for the podium was not resolved until the end. Verstappen tried to tie the third place in his second stop, a little more than 20 laps to the end, when you pulled on a second set of tyres ultrablandos with that he fought with Nico Rosberg and Valtteri Bottas, both with soft. The German Mercedes had to fight more than expected, for a pit stop due to a puncture slow, after which he mounted a set of soft tyres at the end he gave a huge performance. Verstappen got to pull like a demon to try to take over the position of the Williams, as I looked behind the leader of the World.
The rebel pilot of Red Bull will not put anything easy and not only failed with the Dutch, but on the last lap was crossed at the entry of the last chicane, and on the verge of losing the fifth place.
Beating Alonso to the tires
Fernando Alonso was left out of the fight for the points very soon. In his first pit stop he lost eight seconds due to a problem with the hydraulic jack which made him lose several positions in a direct manner, in addition to exit in an area of too much traffic that prevented him from rolling so clean.
was Not the best race for the spaniard, who has always had cars with which to fight on the track, and a conservative strategy, without much more to fight for the points. The performance of the Honda engine also gave him great joy, and at the end, even asked if he should leave, but pulled out forces of weakness to end up on a eleventh street that knows little. His record of laps at the same compound: 52 turns to the soft Pirelli.
Who came between the points was Carlos Sainz. With a strategy that you benefited fully, went from a twenty-position to a ninth, which gave him two points. If in the Red Bull they went well with Verstappen, Toro Rosso were also able to draw oil from a ultrablandos at the end of the race with the spaniard, tied it in the ninth position at the end.
