Kia Niro, the 'crossover' hybrid is official


The new Kia Niro is already here in a formal manner. After the prototype Kia Niro Concept, shown in the Lounge of Frankfurt 2013, we knew that there would come a production model. Its development has been long, and we have been showing its evolution through our spy photos. Now, taking advantage of the Salon Chicago 2016, hybrid crossover becomes a reality.

We are dealing with a model very important for the south Korean manufacturer, with many new hybrid and electric models planned for the immediate future. The Kia Niro is one of the first on the market: not only will be on sale in the united States in the second half of 2016, but that will also come to Europe very soon.


The Kia Niro will have a size similar to or slightly lower than – that of the Kia Sportage, and it also adopts its style of family in details such as its front. It is seated on the new platform and Hyundai-Kia specific to hybrid models also used in the Hyundai Ioniq, with a fairly light weight. Its design is that of a modern ‘crossover’ compact, without excessive risks: Kia has preferred a style relatively conventional for their hybrids.

Despite this, there is little to object in this regard: the design of the Kia Niro is dynamic and is not devoid of attractiveness. The greater part of the role is in the technical section, with a hybrid composed of an electric part of 43 HP and a block of gasoline Atkinson cycle, direct-injection four-cylinder engine with 1.6 liters of cubicaje and 103 HP of power.

In total, the Kia Niro offers 146 HP and a maximum torque of 265 Nm. There is No traction to the four wheels, but the power is derived only to the front axle through a shift DCT dual-clutch and six-speed.

Still have not been provided figures of performance or consumption, or emissions certified, but the Kia Niro will be able to boast of efficiency: it is estimated that about 4.7 liters/100 km with CO2 emissions of 89 g/km to help the driver be more efficient, the ECO-Driving Assistance System anticipates the slopes in descent or in climb thanks to the help of the browser, and so being able to anticipate when to recharge the batteries and better manage the fuel consumption.
