Despite the expectations created in pre-season, to first free practice session of the season 2017 at the Albert Park circuit has had the same two cars in the first two positions, the team Mercedes. The three-time Lewis Hamilton set the tone with a fast 1:24.220, staying less than four-tenths of his pole of 2016 (1:23.837), and at least seven of the all-time record of the track (1:23.529, marked in 2011 by Sebastian Vettel).
The british scored his best time with the tires ultrablandas, that appeared with more frequency than usual in this first session. His time was quite faster than his team-mate Valtteri Bottas, but the finn managed to retain the second position with a 1:24.803. After the germans, ended up in austria: Daniel Ricciardo finished at just 83 thousandths ahead of Bottas, exhibiting a certain robustness with your Red Bull, and Max Verstappen was four tenths off his teammate despite some problems at the meshing gears.

The Ferrari ended up just behind, in fifth and sixth place. Sebastian Vettel began the session with a problem in the activator of the DRS, and its best time did not improve the Kimi Räikkönen. Your advantage with the rest, even with all, was substantial: Felipe Massa led the train of pursuers with a 1:26.142, followed closely by Romain Grosjean, Nico Hülkenberg and Sergio Perez, in a session that took place under a sunny sky and without any mishap on the track.
McLaren haven’t managed to get rid of the problems in this first batch of free. Stoffel Vandoorne spent the first half of the session in the pits due to a problem on the gearbox, and although the belgian managed to roll the rest of the session with no apparent problems, its best time was the worst of the grill, below even a Jolyon Palmer that suffered problems in the joints of the transmission. For his part, Fernando Alonso shot with a little more ease and, despite not riding in the final minutes, ended in 14th place with a 1:27.116 after 18 laps.
