Mercedes tested the second version of its thruster unit 2017 the last week of testing in Barcelona. Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas were in charge of validating the unit which in principle was intended to be used in the Australian Grand Prix, but reliability problems related to the crankshaft did doubt the engineers of the German mark.
But Autosport can confirm that, finally, Mercedes has decided to use this latest version in the first race of the season and not only for the factory team, but also for Force India and Williams.
it Is speculated that the modifications made by the engineers during the winter period has made possible an increased output of 70 horse with respect to 2016 and that, for fear of a breakage related to the crankshaft, Mercedes did not use the engine at 100% of its capacity in the pre-season test, something that has also been commented in the case of Ferrari.
Is opened, therefore, the possibility that the scenario in Melbourne is different to the one seen in Barcelona and, as all the teams begin to operate near the limit of the mechanics, the order expected to suffer unexpected changes.
