Much eye: Lamborghini wants to be the first one to manufacture engines of carbon fiber (in a year and a half)

your sports use various carbon fiber components, such as spoilers, and exterior panels, or even his monohull, as no surprise to anyone. The carbon fiber has become the material of choice of Lamborghini, the employee in the monocoque of the Lamborghini Aventador, or even in the majority of the exterior wall cladding and body-of its latest gem, the Lamborghini Centennial. But if we told you that the next step will be to create engines of carbon fiber, and that Lamborghini is willing to present this innovation as soon as possible, in just a year and a half, probably you’ll start to imagine that the challenges faced by the brand of Sant’agata are not few.

Word of Stefano Domenicali, former Team Principal of the Scuderia Ferrari, and is currently CEO of Lamborghini. The goal is that Lamborghini will become the first manufacturer to mass-produce engines based on carbon fiber. The first step what we will see in an engine that uses connecting rods of carbon fiber, with the promise of benefit from the multiple advantages of this material.

Think that the carbon fiber is lighter and that when it comes to employing this material in the connecting rods of an engine of twelve cylinders, which would use the hypothetical successor of the Lamborghini Aventador, the improvement would be really important.

Stefano Domenicali stated in an interview with Automotive News, that thanks to the carbon fiber are already thinking about V12 engines between 40% and 50% lighter than the current. Which, in a nutshell, it would be a great advantage, and would significantly enhance the power and, obviously, the acceleration. In any case, the stress, the temperature, and the tolerance required for the material, make the development of carbon fiber suitable for this application will be a challenge for the engineers.

So confident are they in Lamborghini that are already provided, even final dates. Is expected to make his first engine with carbon fibre components to be ready in a year and a half, at the beginning of 2018. And from then on, his release would be imminent. For then the Lamborghini Aventador will have reached its seventh birthday…

The polymer used to cook these engines will be the same as already announced recently, and they called Forged Composite, a carbon fiber of excellent properties and with a great competitive advantage, your production times significantly lower than those of other polymers used to date. Lamborghini as announced, coinciding with the opening of its research centre of Advanced Composite Structures Laboratory (ACSL) in Seattle, as one of the most important developments of the last few years.
