'Pechito' Lopez will be the pilot of Toyota in the WEC

José María ‘Pechito’ Lopez will be the pilot of Toyota’s Gazoo Racing in the Endurance World, as revealed ‘Autosport’. The argentinian driver, three times champion of the WTCC, and pilot DS Virgin in Formula E will race at the controls of one of the Toyota TS050 Hybrid from the season 2017, making its debut in the top category of the WEC. According to the cited source, ‘Pechito’ Lopez has signed his new contract with the japanese team, although this will not be official until the end of the present season in which Toyota still fight for the drivers title.

This movement is a direct consequence of the test that has made Jose Maria ‘Pechito’ Lopez with the prototype of Toyota in the last few months, especially after discovering the firm intention of Citroën Racing to leave the WTCC at the end of 2016. With three titles under the arm, and without great options within the World of passenger Cars, the argentinian driver has searched for new options and at 33 years of age the competition in LMP1 with Toyota Gazoo Racing can be a great option to compete as an official driver of a brand, as done with after his debut in the ePrix of Hong Kong in Formula E with DS Virgin.

With all and according to ‘Autosport’, the signing of ‘Pechito’ will not be announced until next month of January, at which time Lopez will be free of their commitments with Citroën Racing, to the couple that Toyota Gazoo Racing will be able to manage its roster of pilots. In this aspect, the british publication says that the arrival of ‘Pechito’ Lopez would be the output of Stéphane Sarrazin, a movement that might not be the only within the bosom of Toyota, as explained Pascal Vasselon, Technical Director of Toyota, without giving the name of ‘Pechito’ in no time.
