The past month of march, at the Geneva motor show, the Director of the PSA Group announced a new strategic plan, “Push to Pass” with a focus on organic growth from 2016 to 2025.
After numerous rumors about a possible marketing of a Pickup, it was confirmed that the development of this body, a model that will be of global production, but did not materialize the date of placing, or where it will be manufactured even if the new factory in Algeria could be the one in charge, nor if it will be sold by Peugeot and Citroën or if only one of them.
Would be the logical thing to do, but we have been able to know that is not the case. The new strategic plan is flaked in several performances and one of them affects the approach laid out for each brand. Citroën is chosen to provide models with a more modern design and a differentiated, higher level of comfort and the one in charge of deploying an arsenal of security technologies and connectivity useful.
You may be wondering, what does this have to do with the Pickup. Much, because PSA seeks to further differentiate their main brands to avoid cannibalization of each other and while you are going to lose models in segments traditional and historical, the other will be compensated with another type of models. Taking into account the approach for both brands, Peugeot is the one that has all the ballots to be done with the Pickup.
The development would be a joint-venture with another manufacturer
With this strategic plan, designed and saving the most in the development of new projects, there is a problem: the modular platform EMP2 may not be ready for a Pickup is pure, despite the fact that the new Peugeot Traveller and Citroën Spacetourer used this base.
If the studies of this platform confirm that it is not possible to use the Group PSA deck two options of collaboration with another manufacturer:
1. With Toyota, because the japanese and the French group already develop together, and made Peugeot 108, Citroen C1 and Toyota Aygo, in addition to the Peugeot Traveller, Citroën Spacetourer and Toyota ProAce, and the Toyota Hilux is a competitive model of high reliability.
2. Another partner well-known, FCA, with which to share development and production of the Citroën Nemo, Peugeot Bipper and Fiat Fiorino, together with the big Peugeot Boxer, Citroën Jumper. And the new Fiat Bull is also an option and modern reliability. In addition, on the ground of Sevelsud, where they make the big trade, made a huge investment a few years ago to expand the range of models to manufacture.
The two options are perfectly feasible, having dismissed as a third option, which was to develop the model in China with Dongfeng Peugeot-Citroën and their own platforms so that PSA knew that it was facing technical difficulties, especially if he wanted to sell his model in Europe, and that could take more than 24 months, your project, that is the maximum period that have been proposed: 2018.
