We are primarily an event. Very soon Porsche debuts a new four-cylinder engine, horizontally opposed, in two banks, with two cylinders on each side, flanking a crankshaft. Engine type boxer, flat-4, with its four-cylinder will be below the already known flat-6 used historically in the models, Porsche 911, Porsche Cayman and Porsche Boxster. A novelty so important, that even in Stuttgart have decided to change the name by which we will know the two sports of access of the range Porsche, the mid-engine, which from now on will respond to the names of Porsche 718 Boxster and Porsche 718 Cayman. But that is not all. There will still be many important developments to take into account.
The denomination 718 are inherited from the Porsche 718 of the fifties, a sports racing, without a roof and with four-cylinder engine, which was derived from the 550.
The denomination 718 is not casual. The Porsche 718 was born in the fifties, as an evolution of the Porsche 550, and as a sports career without a ceiling, and a mid-engine, a boxer four-cylinder maximum power. Hence, Porsche has opted for to recover this name historical to celebrate an event as important as this, the arrival of a new four-cylinder engine-opposed two to two, and turbo, to bring a new level the benefits of the range Boxster and Cayman.
In a way that would confirm, finally, that Porsche is called to leave its range of naturally aspirated engines towards turbocharged engines, more powerful, and more efficient, as the recently premiered for the renewed range Porsche 911 Carrera and Carrera S.
Cayman and Boxster will be more similar than ever, with the exception that the first will remain a coupe, and the second a convertible. The curious fact is that Cayman will replace the Boxster as the sports most economical Porsche, making the convertible is slightly more expensive than the coupe.
But that will not be the only important detail of the new Porsche 718 Boxster and 718 Cayman, will be presented throughout 2016.
Porsche has just confirmed a new positioning of the range Boxster and Cayman. These two sports access, and a central motor, will be more alike than ever. Porsche wants to level both technically and aesthetically are part of the same family, as is the case with a Porsche 911 Carrera and a Porsche 911 Cabrio. So that the families Boxster and Cayman, still preserving its name in order to differentiate between convertible and coupe, are grouped in the new family Porsche 718.
The result of this new grouping will be a new pricing policy. Currently, a Boxster starts at 56.938€ and the Cayman does so in 57.461€. That is to say, the coupe is more expensive than the convertible. But from now on, 718 Cayman is positioning itself as the sport most economical Porsche, for the 718 Boxster do the own, as its convertible version, for a price slightly higher, and following the logic already seen in the range 911.
