PSA goes for his second attempt to get plug-in hybrids

Citroën C4 HybrideHDi (2006)

The PSA Group takes pursuing the perfect combination of hybrids from more than 10 years ago, is no novelty. At the Geneva motor show are presented two prototypes of Citroën C4 and Peugeot 307, the HybrideHDi, with a diesel engine 1.6 HDi 90 BHP of power and a small electric motor. This combination of front-wheel drive, it never came to market, and the case was buried for a time. The idea was to sell them in 2010. There was a prototype hybrid 307, and a back of the 308 with a little more power, submitted in 2007.

We go to the year 2008, when it was introduced at the Paris Salon prototype Citroën Hypnos Concept, which not only anticipated the Citroën DS5 (later DS 5 to dry), but the hybrid system of new generation, all-wheel-drive and nearly double the power. The electric motor is transferred to the rear axle, while the diesel engine is in charge of the front axle. In the first generation, it was all going to go in front.

PSA Peugeot Citroën, which is called before, because he believed that the ideal combination was a diesel engine and electric motor to achieve a reduction in consumption of 35%, but then this figure was revised and remained at 30%. Meanwhile, the enemy to beat was Toyota, and, to a lesser extent, Honda. Had to wait for another technological leap yet.

Also in 2008, presents the Peugeot Prologue Concept, that not only anticipates the 3008 first generation, also the hybrid system in its specification final. Promises a consumption of 3.8 l/100 km of diesel with 200 HP of power, combining the engine 2.0 HDi 163 HP with a rear electric motor of 37 HP. The crossover will be the first model to be marketed as well, and comes to the market in 2010.

In a short time the same hybrid scheme is installed in the family 508 RXH (2011) and the sedan 508 (2012), with the same power and consumption approved is also very low. The HYbrid4 system is intended to operate up to about 120 km/h, when the electrical part stops attending. The system does not proved to be very efficient, because the actual consumption was practically the same, but there was a important difference of price, especially with regard to the THP petrol 155 HP.

The thing promised, PSA was estimated that in 2012 it would have on the street a plug-in hybrid with a diesel engine, which would have consumption approved of the half of the 3008 HYbrid4. It is also expected to market in 2015 a petrol hybrid for the chinese market, something that didn’t actually occur, ever. he did not arrive Either that plug-in hybrid in 2012, or 2015, or at any time.

The sales of the HYbrid4 were testimonial in 2011, it barely exceeded a thousand units, but began to animate the thing in 2012 and 2013, with a top-of-26.200 units in a year. The hybrid versions came to be 25% of sales of DS5, 20% of the 508, and 16% of the 3008. From there, the numbers start to go down quickly.

Year Sales HYbrid4 models
2011 1.100 units
2012 26.200 units
2013 22.100 units
2014 12.400 units
2015 5.800 units

In 2011, it was announced the increase of the collaboration of PSA and BMW, which at that time they manufactured engines, jointly, to enter into the field of hybrids. The joint venture would be called BMW Peugeot Citroën electric cooperative, with a total investment of 100 million euros, that would provide cars to the two manufacturers for 2014.

Nor was such a thing. The joint venture was liquidated 18 months in a very cloudy for PSA, General Motors got in the register of shareholders. The developments had to be pursued separately.

BMW has finished developing hybrid models by your own, or with other manufacturers. Remember the first generation of hybrids, not plug-in, in that they were the ActiveHybrid in X6, 3 Series, 5 Series and 7 Series. That is ended up leaving and now opt for plug-in hybrids with its range iPerformance.
