Report F1: Myths and realities of the duel between Rosberg and Hamilton

comparativa-pilotos-mercedes-f1-2016-201

The season 2016 we have been offered a duel at the summit between Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton. One so intense that it has left the winner of the same so empty inside that you have been pushed to withdraw from Formula 1 and, at least for the moment, also of the competition.

Both have had little opposition on the part of other drivers throughout the season, but their dispute has reached moments of maximum stress that has been put to the test their capacity for self-control and their quality as drivers. The overwhelming dominance exercised by Mercedes became, in reality, a trap for both pilots, which were soon aware that in this third duel in a row for the world title, the conclusions to draw were going to be direct, clear, and series of sound bites.

Nico Rosberg had to break once for all with the domain exercised by Lewis Hamilton, that if he wanted to become one of the biggest in the category, he had to get the fourth title in front of a pilot without superstar rank.

After the outcome, the prevailing view has been supported on several pillars. On the one hand, Lewis Hamilton has been faster, but also more irregular and has been very hampered by mechanical failures. On the other, Nico Rosberg has maintained a remarkable consistency that has allowed him to overcome his virtuous companion and rival. But, what is certain in all of this? We have compiled the relevant data from each Grand Prix in order to establish a verdict is accurate and concluyente.

Season of ups and downs

Both Nico Rosberg as Lewis Hamilton have had Great Prizes dominant in those who have passed to his team-mate throughout the weekend. But while Nico got in the least occasions, it is true that your opponent served the last four races -in which Rosberg had a clear title options – to improve their statistics.

On several occasions, Lewis Hamilton was superior to its companion, but little details like the bad outputs are Australia, Bahrain or Italy is burdened in a similar way, as did the breakage of the motor of China, Russia and Malaysia.

however, Rosberg was also not exempt of problems, losing several positions in the output of Australia -a career that also won – and Germany -in which he finished third as a result of a sanction when he had recovered the second place-. In regard to breakdowns, the German also suffered, but only the prick -along with the brake problems and consumption – Canada influenced negatively in the outcome of the race.

comparativa-pilotos-mercedes-f1-2016-201

Nico Rosberg was leading the championship for most of the year, losing such honor only in the Great Prize of Hungary, Germany, Belgium and Italy.

In regard to errors of piloting determinants, Hamilton only made one: which prevented him from getting a time in the Q3 of the Grand Prix of Europe after smashing his car through the touch of the protections. Rosberg, for his part, lost the possibility to be fourth in Canada to do a spin while attempting to overtake Verstappen on the penultimate lap. In Austria, his awkward defense of the lead over Hamilton in the last lap ended up leaving him off the podium. The German has been markedly more likely to be disciplined or to be involved in incidents with other riders, especially in the races prior to the summer break, in which Hamilton came to regain the lost ground in the standings and took the lead of the championship.

Lewis Hamilton has shown to be clearly faster than Nico Rosberg this season, dominating in qualifying and missing out on numerous points as a result of bad outputs, and failures that influenced in a decisive way in his race result.

In a season in which Hamilton has not shown, nor much less, your best face, Nico Rosberg has not been particularly consistent in its performance, but yes has managed to raise the level after the summer break and, unlike what happened in the first half of the year, take advantage of the weaknesses of your opponent to get to the last few races with a clear advantage. What would have happened if Mercedes had not had such a mechanical advantage? That is something that we will never know.
