there is No brand that is safe to offer a product SUV. Customers will not stop demanding this type of vehicle and the different manufacturers, as a general rule, don’t have a single SUV model in its range but that offer various in function of their sizes, as had always happened with conventional vehicles. Audi is one of those brands that has a wide range of vehicles SUV, starting with the newly released Q2, through Q3, Q5 and Q7, and waiting for the arrival of a new member named Q8 for 2018.
The signature of Ingolstadt just renew the Audi Q5, whose first generation was with us since 2008, having traded 1.6 million. This makes him in the model “Q” of Audi’s best selling until the time and the first to surpass the one million units sold; all this, remember, during a major economic crisis. We attended the presentation of the new Audi Q5 and we put it to the test.
The new Audi Q5 is produced exclusively in the factory of mexican San José Chiapa. It has developed on the modular platform MLB (the great), that is, shares a platform with models such as the Audi Q7, with which it has many things in common, or even the Audi A4. New technologies and the use of materials have allowed save 90 kilos of weight over its predecessor.
We have been able to try it out for several tens of kilometres in the national presentation, leaving us a few a good feeling at the level of comfort, equipment and quality. We got to the controls of the engine 2.0 TDI 163 BHP with quattro during the greater part of the route, but before I tell how it’s going let’s get an overview the second generation of the SUV German.
More square, more muscular
there’s no doubt that the first generation of the Audi Q5 came with the key, offering just what consumers were looking for. The product was as claimed that the German mark lengthened the most of your life. Now comes the second generation, and with the results of the predecessor and the traditional effectively business as usual German, the hope was that the designers not arriesgaran at all with the design, on an aesthetic level have simply retouched.
Aesthetically remains easy to identify, as a model of Audi, and the design changes come more in the lines than in the ways. The predecessor model was looking for lines more rounded, trying to appear sympathetic and calm, while the current offers lines more straight and angular, which translates into a feeling of muscles and sportsmanship. You sound the recipe? Yes, it is the same as that used a year ago in the Audi Q7. They have also widened the grille Singleframe, house brand, and have delayed the exterior mirrors to improve vision and reduce the aerodynamic resistance, which is located in a Cx 0,30.
The Audi Q5 wins centimeters outside and also inside
exterior dimensions of the Q5 have grown. Now measures 4,66 meters long (+ 34 mm), 1,89 meters wide and 1,66 high. The distance between the axles has also grown significantly, but minimally, at-2,82 m (+ 12 mm). According to Audi, now the occupants of the rear row will have a more space in width and in height.
Our impressions have been of a few places front very spacious, in the middle of the segment, and in which we do not suffer from a feeling of overwhelm. The unit tested had a sun roof, which always reduces the space in height, but even so the way many centimeters. The rear seats are very good always and when we are four people; that is to say, the outer seats will be very comfortable. However, the central square is much more uncomfortable to be more close, hard, and for having a the great tunnel transmission.
trunk has a capacity that varies between 550 and 610 litres depending on how they are placed in the back seats, as they boast of regulation, longitudinal and back inclination. If you folded down the second row of seats, the cargo volume increases to the 1.550 litres.
An interior of very high quality
In the cabin, we find a inner very own Audi. Everything is very tidy and to hand for the driver. In addition, we have the Audi virtual cockpit that allows us to dispense with the central screen of the dashboard, since the dashboard will have all the data necessary for driving such as speed, revs, temperature, fuel consumption, radio and even the browser with a high-quality. All of this very tidy, configurable and whose management is done from the steering wheel itself.
In the dashboard we will find ourselves with very few buttons, the essential. The screen will not be touch, handled in an intuitive way with the jog dial and a touch panel for the introduction of useful commands to, for example, enter the destination in the browser or to dial a phone number. Personally, the shifter for the automatic transmission does not finish to convince me, preferring a smaller dimensions.
We were surprised at the interior quality, and that which we hoped for a good job in this regard. All knobs, upholstery, and items are of very high quality, seeming to own a top model (as could be the Audi Q7. The touch, the design and the settings are to a very high level. Forget about crunches when you press on certain points of the dashboard or to the face sections broken because it does not find them.
The Audi Q5 will be available with two engines of gasoline and four diesel, powers from 150 to 354 CV. The range of gasoline is composed by a 2.0 TFSI with 252 HP and a V6 3.0 TFSI 354 HP reserved for the prestacional SQ5. Meanwhile, the options diesel are three variants of the famous 2.0 TDI with outputs of 150, 163 and 190 HP, in addition to the V6 3.0 TDI of 286 HP.
today as can be purchased in versions 2.0 TFSI and three mechanical 2.0 TDI (190 HP only with automatic, the manual will come later). Can only be associated to a manual gearbox variants 2.0 TDI 150 and 190 HP, the latter is already offered with automatic transmission.
Depending on the motorization, we will find front-wheel drive, the quattro and ultra quattro permanent. Traction front is reserved for the least powerful of the range, the TDI of 150 HP. The quattro ultra, which is more efficient for disengage completely and avoid the frictions and movements of the shafts and gears of the rear-wheel drive, offered on the 2.0 TFSI and the TDI of 163 and 190 HP. The system quattro permanent, that comes with center differential, limited-slip comes to the blocks of V6 3 litre, both the TFSI as the TDI.
Behavior in asphalt, the Audi Q5 2.0 TDI 163 CV
Time to get behind the wheel. On the first ride, what do we do with the variant 2.0 TDI 163 BHP. Audi drive select in “auto” mode, the transmission lever in D position and circular. The majority of the route was carried out by motorway, where this engine was enough to maintain a constant speed in most situations although it is true that we wanted something “short”.
it Was easy to lose some speed before a hill rather steep, taking the automatic transmission to reduce from seventh to sixth gear, although it is true that the last link has the clear objective of reducing consumption. In any case, we thought it was the right thing to do, as they face trips by ports with four people and the trunk loaded would have left a lot of agility. We also thought that, at least this unit, let more sound of the engine of the desired during accelerations, although as I’ll tell you a few more paragraphs down does not occur the same with all engines.
with Respect to the driving, the Audi Q5 will not be a car very nimble for its weight and dimensions in areas too mousetraps, but the ride comfort is exceptional. This is due especially to the air suspension, which is an opening in the range Q5. Absorbs the irregularities of the terrain as if we were in a cloud and, if we increase the pace, or we can select the mode of driving ofportivo, avoid a few steep inclinations of the body. Going through any town, in comfort mode and at an acceptable speed, the bumps were not for nothing annoying.
And now we got the Audi Q5 2.0 TDI 190 CV
The only difference from one version to another is in the mechanics, although as you can see in the photos this one had the sports package “s line”. The behavior of this propellant, without being sporty, it does offer a greater agility and response when faced with pending fast lanes or perform overtaking. In addition, in the middle zone of the rev counter we have found it more enjoyable and least sonorous. Without a doubt, this mechanical will be more recommendable than the earlier, especially if we are going to travel or ride your bike regularly on roads of a double meaning.
In terms of the behavior of the part cycle, we have not found differences, resulting as comfortable and enjoyable than the previous unit. We have not done an exhaustive test, but a few miles away. We will wait to enjoy some unit for several days to be able to examine it more thoroughly.
In the field is capable of more than what is required
During the presentation we make a few evidence outside of the asphalt, although low demand. Before anything, we must comment that the increased length of the body in this second generation has reduced the angles of input, output, and ventral of the SUV German, but to be able to have the air suspension the body can be raised a few centimeters and as well compensate. We will have two driving modes for driving out of asphalt, one will be the “allroad” and the other will be the “lift/offroad”.
Whenever you get out of the asphalt will be interesting to use the allroad (lift the body 2.5 cm), while if the ground is very broken and we see possibilities of rubbing with the low-we will use the lift/offroad. We will gain a few more inches in height (2,5 more than in the mode allroad), being a separation between the lower and the soil 22 cm and the drive system will also be adapted to gain adhesion.
travelled out of the asphalt were for areas of loose gravel on slopes, a descent rather inclined where we used the control speed of descent, something of mud and crossing a small stream. The Audi Q5 exceeded’re testing, that an SUV traction on a single axis, and without a considerable height would not happen, without problems counting with tires completely aliphatic but it is true that there were far too complicated. We also recognize that few customers of the Q5 will use this car to get out of the asphalt or a road in good condition.
