SsangYong is a brand that is not among the more sold within our borders, and that has an approach that may be “strange”. The majority of automotive brands seem to seek the greatest number of sales possible, but that doesn’t always mean that they are the more benefits they get. Its specialty is SUV’s, and crossover, so the current fashion of these vehicles comes phenomenal. The crisis, to be a brand economically, also.
We just get off a new product that is already in the dealership, the SsangYong Korando 2017; but before that we talk very lightly of the brand in Spain. Despite that here is not a very well-known brand, its growth is still very interesting. In 2016 has grown 14% with regard to 2015; while if we compare the sales data of the past year with 2012 the increase is triggered by 169 %. We are now going with the SsangYong Korando, which is who we are dealing with these lines.
The Korando began its marketing in Spain back in 1996, enrolling 12,000 units since then, and being one of the cars most recognized of the south Korean company. Is the fifth generation of this model, who was born in 1974, and now presents a graceful redesign. The goal of the brand is to sell, in Spain, about 1,000 units per year approximately.
Small cosmetic changes but very successful
The compact SUV of SsangYong has received some subtle change that, despite not being too large, give a very different picture. Such changes, in the front, mainly appear in the headlights. Now they have larger dimensions and LED daytime running light. The bumper also changes its forms, with greater surface finished in black plastic to give more impression of robustness and a new antinieblas. By the way, the turn signals are now located in the low area, together with the aforementioned antinieblas. The grille is also new and the nerves in the hood are different.
changes on the side and in the back are much more content. On the side we find a few new wheel designs and some front wings of greater width. The behind also has seen redesign your bumper; although behind remains perfectly recognizable as a SsangYong Korando, which can be confused with an Opel Mokka by the shapes of their riders.
we can Not fond of the exterior design without going over their primary measures. The Korando has a length of 4,41 meters, a width of 1.83 and height of 1.67 (not counting the rails of the roof). The wheelbase of this SUV is of 2,65 meters.
One of the most spacious in its category
Despite not having taken out the meter, the compass, the square and the set square, the feeling is that the interior of the SsangYong Korando is one of the most spacious in its segment; and that’s what our unit tests bring solar roof, which always subtract a few inches of height. In the spaces front we have more than enough, so much so that people from around the 2 meters of height should not feel overwhelmed.
squares later are very generous, especially the sides. I’m 1,76 about and, with the driver’s seat placed in my position, there were some 15 cm so that my knees touched the seat in front of you. The dimension of height is also very good, not having nor problems of width. The central square, as it is logical, it is not as comfortable; although the hyundai brand has taken care of this fifth occupant for not presenting to the tunnel transmission. We should mention that the backrest of the seats can vary your incline at 17.5 degrees.
Pass trunk. It has a volume of 486 litres, which places it in the middle-high category. The back seats can be folded in the proportions 40:60 and, when folded down both parties, we find ourselves with a load volume of 1.312 litres, and the floor totally flat. The volume of the trunk does not decrease in the versions 4×4.
Update for the interior design
This restyling has also brought about notable changes in the interior. The SsangYong Korando has redesigned those elements key of the interior that we can transmit feeling of being in front of a car outdated or current. These are: the steering wheel, the dashboard, the hues used in the central area of the dashboard, panelling of the doors and the knob of the transmission (both manual and automatic).
Despite the fact that we are faced with a brand categorized as “economic”, what is certain is that the materials used to are not the usual of a car “low-cost”. The top of the dashboard presents a fluffy very nice, as in the area of the “armrest” of the doors. The rest of the elements is of hard material, although it seems to be good settings. To highlight also the great number of holes distributed all around the cabin.
A negative that we see in the interior is the touch screen of the dashboard. Readability in most situations is good, and its correct operation, but if the rays of the sun have an impact on it, there are times when it is really difficult to know what information is showing.
Only one engine, the 2.2 diesel 178 HP
The SsangYong Korando is offered only with engine 2.2 diesel 178 HP. This power is delivered at 4,000 rpm, while its maximum torque is 400 Nm and is available between 1,400 and 2,800 rpm. The consumption approved is between 5.3 l/100 km and 6.8 l. This is so because, even if you only have one engine available, there are versions automatic and manual, with simple traction front axle and 4×4. Gearboxes are six-speed, while the all-wheel drive uses a differential type Haldex lockable to 50 %.
Driving the SsangYong Korando
We’ve put ourselves at the controls of the new SUV from south korea and, mainly, transmitted to us that is a full product always and when we don’t have any interest in sensations sports. Is fully configured given precedence to the comfort. The unit tested was the version of the manual change and traction to the front axle.
engine 2.2 diesel, with its 178 HP and 400 Nm of torque, is more than enough to move with ease 1.673 pounds that declares this version. Despite the fact that little above idle it shows something that is lazy, just to overcome the 1,500 turns your push is starting to show. is Not an engine that shines for its refinement acoustic, but it is true that the vibrations are well contained in the cabin. For travel by motorway with several occupants and the boot up stops should be sufficient.
suspensions have a tare quite soft. On secondary roads and between curves, it seems that the car takes too long in support. The positive side of this configuration is the great comfort traveling by expressways, when faced with the bumps that populate our cities and, of course, at the exit of the asphalt and go on tracks of land; where not shown or much less as dry as in other cars of the competition.
A point that we liked is the address. We assume that will be a thing of rolling a few days with the car and we will end up adapting to its operation, but what is certain is that the address is very indirect, and will not transmit to us what is happening under the front wheels. As this detail is intended for circulation outside of the asphalt, but what is certain is that by road generates a certain amount of doubt, until we got used to, when drawing curves. We have that turn the steering wheel quite a bit more than usual.
SsangYong has organized a brief tour through some paths of very little difficulty. The tour we made to the controls of a unit with traction 4×4, but I think that we would not have had too many problems if we could have a 4×2. We will wait to test it thoroughly in order to gather more information about their behavior offroad.
The SsangYong Korando is a product to be taken into account for all those customers seeking a compact SUV and not be able to (or want to) shell out the money it cost to a model generalist, which is quite choop it. Maybe take back that you only have a motor available. SsangYong has mentioned that the demand for gasoline in cars of this type for Spain is very low, so that they would go to accounts. On the other hand, as you will see below, the Korando brings back a lot of equipment from the finished base. Finally, their warranty is five years, something that also is taken into account.
